Solomon Star NewsKurukuru cruise onFriday, 13 August 2010SOLOMON Islands futsal team the Kurukuru look on course to retain their title after registering their fourth consecutive victory in the 2010 OFC Futsal Championship at the Vodafone Arena last night.
The Kurukuru outclassed Tahiti 6-2 with Captain Elliot Ragomo, Jack Wetney and Micah Lea’alafa once again stealing the show.
Micah currently leading the golden boot race was the icing on the cake as he came close in the first four minutes with a thundering shot which just sailed over the cross bar.
Ragomo then hammered another bomber minutes later hitting the uprights.
Ragomo who missed the game against Vanuatu on Wednesday scored the opening goal for Solomon Islands in the ninth minute but hardworking Tahitian forward Meiarii Si equalized just three minutes later to make the match interesting.
It was not as fans expected to be a goal galore for the champions as Tahiti stood their ground displaying solid defence denying the talented Kurukuru boys to score easily.
But Ragomo struck again in the 14th minute after he danced around three Tahiti players.
Lenson Bisili then added another for a 3-1 lead to the Dickson Kadau coached side at halftime.
Wetney scored a beauty in the 27th minute but Tahiti’s Loic Oldham pulled one back to bring some respect to the scoreline.
Lea’alafa and Jeffery Bule found the back of the net late in the second spell for the commanding 6-2 victory.
Elliot was satisfied with the outing and said his team played with more commitment and did not panic when put under pressure.
“We were told by our coach to keep it simple on the court and just play with confidence and we just did this,” he said.
“This championship is our buildup for the World Cup and we are taking every match seriously as the more games we play, the better we will get.”
“The teams have improved a lot and the level of competition has gone up in the region.”
“We have two more matches remaining and both games will be hard as Fiji is the host team while Tuvalu has improved a lot and should not be underestimated.”
The Solomon Islands will take on Fiji in their match today at 3:30pm Solomon Islands time.
