Kurukurus captain leads by example

Saturday, August 14, 2010

SKIPPER Elliot Ragomo led by example as the Kurukurus all but clinched the Oceania Futsal Championship for a third consecutive year after dumping Fiji 7-3 yesterday.

Ragomo was a class act and scored two goals for the clinical Kurukurus.

The Kurukurus, backed by heavy vocal support from the stands, meant business from the start and footwork specialist Jack Wetney was at his deadly best scoring with a great strike in the first minute.

Petero Dauniseka equalised before the Kurukurus ran riot, punishing Fiji's poor coordination and skill level with three well constructed goals.

The home team had no answer to match the pace and skills of the opponents and was forced to defend for long spells.

Micah Lea'Alafa put the visitors ahead 2-1 before Jeffery Bule made it 3-1 with a super finish. Wetney's through pass was met by Lenson Bisili, who broke the Fiji defence and laid the ball back cleverly for Bule.

Elliot was next to score when Fiji simply had no answer to stop a swift one-two move between him and Lea' Alafa.

Fiji's best chances in the first half were missed by Kamal Hassan, Siga Ali and Ratu Josefata Dugucagi.

The Kurukurus continued to pressure Fiji when the second half resumed and it was only a matter of time when Elliot squeezed a powerful shot past Josaia Ratu.

Coleman Makau made it 6-1 with a spectacular long-range effort before goalkeeper David Lafai, who had an off day, gifted Ajesh Narayan a goal.

Wetney and Elliot combined to set up Bisili for the side's final goal before Dauniseka scored his second to bring some respectability to the scoreline.

Fiji coach Hussein Saheb said final passes and poor first touch by players let them down.

He said Solomon Islands were superior technically and tactically.

"Especially their finishing, they were composed.

"The techniques let us down."

Saheb said Fiji created enough chances but poor finishing cost them.

"I don't think we're far from Solomon Islands.

"We exposed them today by creating lot of chances. We were only let down by techniques and players have to work on that."
