Have a game of footie in car park

19 August 2010

YOUNGSTERS in Scarborough are set to benefit from a pioneering football project which aims to kick anti-social behaviour into touch.
North Yorkshire County Council has launched a mobile soccer scheme in the town to allow children the chance to express themselves on the pitch.

The project, aimed at 11 to 18-year-olds, will be based in William Street car park every Friday night f
ADVERTISEMENTor youngsters to hone their skills.
Dubbed the Soccerena, the facility features goal posts, barriers and netting and has been provided by the council's 4Youth service, with training provided by East Coast Futsal coaches.

County Cllr Caroline Patmore, North Yorkshire's Executive Member for Youth Services said: "The mobile pitches are proving extremely popular with young people in Scarborough.

"This is an ingenious way of providing sports facilities in areas which lack such opportunities.

"We hope that the opportunity to get involved in music and arts activities as well as Futsal gives our young people the chance to do something really enjoyable and positive for free with their Friday evenings."

The scheme will also be extended to extra activities with youngsters given the chance to enjoy hip hop and rap sessions, play on computer games in a specially adapted truck.

The council's youth group has also launched a joint venture with support workers and North Yorkshire Police to patrol Scarborough's streets on Friday evenings to meet youngsters and offer them help and advice.

The football training pitch will be open from 6.30pm until 9pm every Friday until September.
