Enfield team going for glory in Sheffield

FUTSAL is the name of the game for a group in Enfield who love playing football of the type usually seen in video games.

Now the team named Fourstar have the chance to dazzle with their array of tricks at the FA Futsal Cup in Sheffield from next week.

Brett O’Connor, who founded the team which trains at Enfield College in Hertford Road, explained what the intense football-variant is all about.

“It’s a very quick form of football and depends on higher skill levels from the players.

“The goals are small as hockey nets and we use a size three football with less bounce, which is where the skill comes in.”

A futsal match takes place on a small pitch which rewards tight ball control and slick passing.

At the FA Futsal Cup, Fourstar will be up against 15 other teams competing for the trophy.

O’Connor is a devotee of the game and has even played it for England, but victory in the FA Cup would be Fourstar’s first silverware.

He plays as ‘pivot’ for the team, in the same position as a striker in association football.

“We got there in our first year and so to win there would be amazing, but we will be playing the very best teams in England,” he said.

Futsal is a game waiting for a chance to explode in the UK, according to O'Connor.

“There just needs to be investment in it,” he insisted. “I think the Football Association is scared to put in the money in case it fails to take off.”
