2010 WUC Futsal Update: Day 1 of Competitions

Tuesday, 24 August 2010

NOVI SAD – Yesterday, August 23rd, the first day of the competition started with nice weather in Novi Sad. The temperature was about 30°C and the sun made it very hot in the morning. Therefore, the players preferred the shadow of the halls and all of them contributed to a perfect atmosphere in the stadiums which was culminated in the evening when the host country played its first preliminary round game in the men’s tournament.

Men’s Tournament

Group A

SRB – ARG: 3-0
Fully crowded sports hall Spens 1 saw a very nice game between the host team and the South-American guests. Serbia scored after a few minutes and controlled the ball mostly on their football shoes. They scored a second goal in the first half and one more in the second; the man of the game was the SRB goalkeeper who saved all shots of the Argentinians.

ISR – FRA: 3-6

Group B

POR – POL: 2-2
We were very close to the first big surprise of the men’s tournament. Defending champion from Portugal equalised the score 25 seconds before the final whistle by the extremely well done free kick shot from the 10 m-point.

URU – MNE: 6-3

Group C

UKR – OMA: 5-1
Oman as non-member association of FISU participating at its first team sports event organized by FISU. Ukraine, the silver medallist from the previous edition used this game as starter of the tournament. Ukraine controlled the ball better and also was effective as they scored five goals and received only one.

RUS – GBR: 5-2

Group D

BRA – SVK: 7-2 (M)
The Brazilian team have the highest ambition when they play the sports with football and there is no doubt that they would like to succeed also at this 12th edition of the WUC Futsal. But this time winning the game was not that easy. SVK scored the first goal after very nice action. The Brazilian answer came very soon. Team Slovakia lead once again but both teams went to the changing room after the first half with a tie (2:2). The second half was under the direction of the Brazilians; they scored twice within 9 seconds and definitely burnt the SVK hope to steal at least one point.

KAZ – CHN: 7-1

Women’s Tournament

POR – FRA: 7-3
The first game of the tournament started in the main hall Spens 1. The defending silver medallist from its first edition played in Vitoria, BRA in 2008 begins the game a little bit sleepy and let the French team score the first goal. During the half time the Portuguese received the magic words from their coach and finally won by a difference of 4 goals. The French team, composed of players of the big futsal brother football can be satisfied with their first game here in Novi Sad.

SRB – BRA: 1-27
This was a one-side game. The game was very easy for the Team Brazil, their skill and virtuosity with the ball and perfect team work demolished the Serbs. The final score says everything and there is no doubt that Brazil is one of the biggest favourites of the women’s second edition of the World University Futsal Championships.

RUS – GBR: 5-0
This game started simultaneously with the game POR – FRA. The Russian girls showed themselves as team well prepared with impressing accuracy. Real key to their success was the phenomenal Russian goalkeeper, who made a clean game. She saved all shots of the GBR and did not give any opportunity to makes this game difficult for RUS.

2010 WUC Futsal Update: Day 2 of Competitions

Wednesday, 25 August 2010

NOVI SAD – Yesterday, August 24th, the second day of competitions was played at the 12th World University Futsal Championship.

Men’s Tournament

Group A

SRB – FRA: 5-0
Again a fully crowded tribune welcomed both teams. The Serbians started to play very offensively, dominating the ball and scored the first goal after five minutes of play. The coach of France switched the shift to stop the Serbians waves of attack but it was not really effective because SRB scored its second goal after seven minutes. The French goalkeeper made several great saves but he capitulated for the third time few minutes before the end of the first half. Leading 3:0 did not pressed the Serbs to score another goal, but it pushed France to be more active and effective in front of the SRB goal. Because the French opened the pitch by the movement towards the Serbian goal, their defence was unstable and Serbia scored two more goals and will go to the second round even if they loose the last game of the group A.

ARG – ISR: 1-6
Israel lost its previous game therefore needed to win against Argentina and proved this very fast by 6 goals and a perfect defence. The game was very nervous and both teams received up to two yellow cards. But Israel team contribute to its wish to win this game with another two goals before the first half finished. During the second half Argentina scored one goal, while the coach of Israel was ejected to the bleachers for anti-sportive behaviour, Argentina missed the penalty and started to play with a flying goalkeeper and received another three goals mostly to the empty net.

Group B

POR – MNE: 3-1
This game was very nervous from the beginning. Both teams needed to win their second game if they want to play Sunday for the medals. Portugal dominated during the first half and scored two times. The second half players from Montenegro started the pressing before the half of the pitch deeply in the zone of Portugal and tried to score a goal. It was almost impossible due to the fantastic saves of the Portuguese goalie. At this moment the game was pretty equal and the players moved up and down. Portugal scored a third goal from one fast contra-attack and controlled the game by a perfect defence. However, the players of Montenegro were able to score at least one goal. Final score 3:1 facilitates the situation for POR before the last game of the group B and definitely moves MNE to the bottom part of the second phase of the men’s tournament.

POL – URU: 4-1
Poland and Uruguay encountered a similar situation as Portugal and Montenegro. One of the winners will have an open door to the top draw of the second phase. Poland started better and scored the first goal of the game. But the well organized defence of Uruguay resisted during the first half but not in the second were they faced another three goals and scored only one. Before the last game of the group the Polish team knows that it will be for 100% part of the top 8 team of the tournament and Uruguay will have one more chance but against a very strong Portugal.

Group C

UKR – GBR: 2-1
Ukraine started to play its second game very well and after a short time scored two goals. However, GBR played the first half mostly in a well organized defence and once they had the ball on their feet they tried to keep it there as long as possible to avoid another fast contra-attack. UKR came to the changing room after the first half with a convenient advantage of two goals. During the second half both teams showed a very nice futsal game. We did not see to many goals but both teams played up and down with a lot of occasions to score. Eight minutes before the end GBR scored its first goal of the tournament with a nice shot under the cross bar. After the goal they jacked up the pressing on the ball when UKR turned around and every-time they gained the ball went into a fast contra-attack. They put all effort to score one more goal, equalised the game and took one point away of the group favourite UKR.

OMA – RUS: 0-15
The Russian machine works very smoothly; its second game against Oman shows that they are ready to go very far in the tournament. The score raised almost by the arithmetic distinction, every second minute one goal. Final score 15:0 for Russia it was an absolute mirror of the game but a little bit to many goals in the net of Oman.

Group D

SVK – CHN: 5-4
SVK started the game with two wonderful goals. But the Chinese did not give in too easy. They started to control their passes which created goal scoring opportunities. After three attempts CHN succeed and came to 1:2 on the scoreboard. The Slovak players did not take into consideration the warning signal of the CHN team, scored a third goal and again started to dream about an easy game. Before the end of the first half CHN scored one more and at the beginning of the second half the Chinese scored a third goal. From this moment both teams did not want to make a mistake and the game was played mostly in the middle of the pitch instead of in front of the nets. However, SVK managed to score a fourth and a fifth goal. The end of the game was very interesting; the Chinese played with a flying goalkeeper, did not scored the goal from a penalty, immediately scored the goal from the play, but had no more time to equalise the score.

BRA – KAZ: 3-2
One more time a difficult game for the Brazilian Men’s Team. The Brazilian team went ahead with a goal of Wesley after a free kick. But Kazakhstan, who plays the World Cup with its senior national team, showed tactical organization and gave no space for Brazil. In the first minute of the 2nd half Kazakhstan tied the game on a quick counterattack. The Brazilian players were stopped by the terrific saves of goalkeeper Konstatin until Gabriel hit the kick and put Brazil ahead again. But in a moment of inattention from the Brazilian defence, KAZ equalised the score again. However, the Brazilian response was swift. While the opponents still were celebrating, Johnny scored for Brazil and secured the win 3-2.

Women’s Tournament

SRB – GBR: 1-10
Its second game the hosts let GBR score three times in the first half. The British girls scored another seven goals in the second half and totally dominated until the end of the game. Seven minutes before the end N°11 Gligoric Minja scored the unique goal for her team after an individual action from the left side of the pitch. The British ladies were better and they took their first three points of the women’s tournament.

BRA – FRA: 9-1
The young ladies from France started the game with respect for their adversaries. A well organized defence supported by the very good performance of the goalkeeper kept up the heads of the FRA team in the first half. BRA scored three times in the first half. The second half started for France like from fairy-tail. The French scored first in the half and came closer to equalise the score. From this point BRA speed up the play, scored another six goals and safely won the game.

RUS – POR: 0-4
The game in the first half was interrupted many times by the intervention of the referees to calm down both teams. The Russian as well as Portuguese team played very rough and did not give to much space for attacks towards the goals. The only goal of this half was scored by the Portuguese player N°9 Ferreira Daniela. The medical staff had also a lot of work during this half. The second half POR started with high pressure on the ball and very soon scored its second and third goal. Because the Russian ladies were short on score they tried to score also but the goalkeeper of Portugal stood firm. The final score 4:0 moves Portugal to the second place in the rankings.
