Katie BondWORKERS from Royal Mail have joined forces with futsal players to help raise vital cash funds for a charity which looks after disadvantaged children.
A five-a-side football tournament has been organised at the @Futsal Arena, in Kembrey Park, next week in aid of Barnardo’s, the chosen charity of Royal Mail.
The event, which is being held on September 19, ties in with the arrival in the town of disabled, ultra-distance athlete Chris Moon MBE as part of his ultimate challenge to run 1,000 miles in one month the following day.
Dominic Virgilio, sales and marketing manager for @Futsal said: “Barnardo’s is a really worthwhile charity helping disadvantaged children.
“Because futsal originated in Uruguay 60 years ago in poverty stricken places to help kids enjoy their football, we wanted to work in partnership with Royal Mail to help more people, disadvantaged or not, get involved and enjoy their sport, while raising money for charity.
“So many world class football players started off playing futsal, it is a great sport, and hopefully will be professional in this country within the next 10 years.
“We want children, parents, everyone to come along on the day because we will have lots going on throughout the afternoon.”
As well as the tournament, there will also be a Penalty Challenge Cup and Cross Bar Challenge, barbecue and raffle.
Carmela Masi, event manager for Royal Mail, said the event was originally scheduled for June to co-incide with the World Cup but had to be rearranged when Swindon Town FC got through to the play-off finals at Wembley.
“Now it is taking place just a day before Chris arrives in Swindon which is great as we have lots of events planned for his arrival,” she said.
“What he is doing is a big challenge for any able-bodied person, so for him, it is amazing.
“We are hoping about 20 teams will register to take part, we have had a lot of interest, but at the moment we only have six teams register.”
The tournament takes place from 2pm to 6pm. Entry costs £35 per team, with up to seven members per team.
The closing date for entries is September 10. For entry forms and details call Carmela on 01793 483397.
