Warwick students take on Australia

EVERY lunch hour, the hall at Warwick High School becomes a sporting hive, echoing to the sound of a round ball being rapidly moved from goal to goal.

Futsal is 5-a-side indoor soccer, a game that requires high levels of skill, speed and fitness.

Nine Warwick High students played in the National Schools Futsal Championship held all over Brisbane and Logan City.

Jayden Webb played for the south-west under-13 boys’ team, which just missed the quarter-finals despite Jayden scoring a feast of goals.

The girls’ under-14 south-west Queensland team consisted of seven players, with four coming from Warwick; Talitha Doro, Shandell Doro, Chloe Ruhle and Emily Hoffmann. They were undefeated until losing by just one goal in the semi-finals. The youngest player was Talitha, who scored a bagful of goals.

Caity Harrison played as goalkeeper for the south-east Queensland Raiders team, which was defeated by an extra time golden goal after coming back from two goals down against a physically imposing team from North Queensland. After the game, the North Queensland coach singled her out for her excellent keeping.

Nick Kemp, Matt Carey and Mark Ferdinand have played in many representative teams for national success. This time their composure was strongly tested when their team was formed only three weeks out from the carnival.

Despite just one training session, their south-west Queensland U19 team made it to the semi-finals before losing by the odd goal. Coach Peter Ferdinand should be congratulated for assisting the boys.

Mark Ferdinand was justly rewarded for his inspiring play when chosen in the All-Stars team, as one of the players of the tournament.
