New South Wales Football FederationAllstars and Quake play out entertaining draw11.10.10The clash between The Inner West Allstars and current competition leaders Campelltown Quake had just about everything ended in a draw. A fair result between two young and highly entertaining teams.
With both teams coming of contrasting results last week it was the Inner West Allstars needing to hit back after last weeks defeat who came storming out of the blocks early with the Allstars prime attacking weapons Natasha Lo Giudice and Helen Petinos combining before young starlet Petinos lashed the ball past Quake custodian Ashley Brown to give the Allstars the lead after 5 minutes.
Lo Giudice was clearly intent on having a big game and it was her shot in the 7th minute which was too hot to handle for Brown and Niqui Caridad was on hand to rifle the rebound back and give the Allstars a quick fire double goal lead.
Quake were under fire and it wasn’t until mid way through the first half that they had their first chance when captain and star player Stephanie Haim got a shot of which went wide after a good long throw by Brown.
Allstars continued to pressure and Lo Giudice almost went close again after she disposed Zoeie Redman but Brown was this time up to the task.
The introduction of Sarah Seamaan in the mid way point of the first half began to turn things in the Quakes favour and it was almost instant that coach Tom Thompsons’ substitution paid off.
Seamaan played a neat 1-2 with Leesa Thompson who found an unmarked Lauren Ralston who tucked it under Amanda Horafios in the Allstar goal to get the Quake side back in the game.
Petinos was really beginning to cause Quakes all sorts of trouble as her speed, quick feet and direct play were troubling the Quake defence and alongside the robust Ashleigh Connor the Quake side were being put under immense pressure and it seemed like the Allstars were going to extend their lead when a great throw by Horafios found Lo Giudice who delightfully controlled the ball and quickly turned and shot only to be denied by a great save.
Quake then retaliated with some good chances of their own first it was Caitlyn Jarvie and then the impressive Linda Dudek had a great strike but was denied by an equally impressive save by the Allstar Keeper.
With only a minute remaining Dudek played a forward ball to Seamaan in the area who played a short quick ball to Haim which was saved by Horafios but referee Best was quick to blow his whistle and correctly award Quake a penalty after Horafios came from behind to try to stop the ball from Seamaan and awarded Horafios a yellow card.
Captain Stephanie Haim was clinical in dispatching the penalty which saw both sides go into the half time break on level pegging.
Quake came out firing in the second half and after a neat 1-2 by Thompson and Jarvie, Thompson was denied by Horafios.
Youngster Kristy Pavlicevic was introduced and made an immediate contribution when she pressured Brown into a mistake and stole the ball from the quake keeper but had her shot stopped on the line by a lunging quake defender.
Ashleigh Connor then had a chance when she turned Ralston but shot just wide.
Quake then had another good chance when a mid court tackle between Leesa Thompson and Helen Petinos left the young Allstar withering in pain clutching her knee, Thompson continued her run and played the ball to Jarvie whos shot seemed destined to put the Quake side in the lead but Horafios made another good save.
Midway through the second half Natasha Lo Giudice was then felled in the Quake penalty area for what many deemed a clear penalty but the officialdom waved away the pleas from the vocal Allstar crowd and furious Allstar bench and only two minutes later Quake had their own penalty appeal when Stephanie Haim elegantly put in Linda Dudek who was brought down by Horafios and a penalty was awarded much to the now very unhappy Allstar supporters.
To rub further salt into the wounds Horafios was given her marching orders for a second yellow card.
Over 4 minutes was then wasted looking for another keeper jersey, when one was found it wasn’t deemed suitable as it didn’t have a number 22 on the back for keeper in waiting Ashleigh Connor but tape had to do, eventually Linda Dudek remained calm and dispatched her penalty to now give the Quake a slender 3-2 lead with only 4 minutes remaining.
But the young Allstars showed tremendous fighting spirit and it was once again the tag team tandem of Petinos and Lo Giudice who proved to be the thorn in the Quake side and with 2.20 left on the clock Lo Giudice found a speedy Petinos who unselfishly squared the ball back to Lo Giudice who scored much the the delight to the parochial home support and equalise for her team.
In the end the game finished a credible and well deserved draw for both teams, but one that Quake might think they should’ve taken home all 3 points after the sending off of the Allstars keeper.
Lo Giudice and Petinos were the standouts for the Allstars whilst captain Steph Haim and Linda Dudek played extremely well for Quake.
