AL-SHARIF (LIBYA CAPTAIN): WE ARE READY TO BE CHAMPIONSThe Libyan futsal team are currently in action in the IV Grand Prix in Anapolis, Brazil and will head home well prepared to host the biggest ever futsal tournament to be held in Africa, the 1st Mediterranean Futsal Cup in November.
Despite failing to progress past the group stage in the “mini-world cup”, Libya showed that they are beginning to become serious contenders in world futsal, losing only one game to the World Champions in a close encounter that ended 2-1 in favour of Brazil.
They will now turn their attentions to a tournament on home soil and Mohammed Al-Sharif, captain and goalkeeper thinks that Libya can become champions of the 1st Mediterranean Futsal Cup, though they must navigate the toughest group.
“It is an exciting event, and an exciting draw, but I think that we are in the most difficult group. Morocco and Greece are not to be reckoned with, they are very good teams, but that’s what we are looking for: a good challenge and a good event [as hosts],” he said.
“It has become our habit [in all competitions] that we are looking to be champions,” he continued; a sentiment echoed by former Spain coach and two time World Champion, Javier Lozano who was present at the draw.
Al-sharif went on to declare Libya ready for the upcoming challenge, “We are very prepared and we are ready.”
Libya take on Syria in the opening game at 20:30 (local time) on 1st November 2010 and then face rivals Morocco before closing the group to European opponents, Greece.
