Schools to fight it out for title

TWO Toowoomba schools will head to Runaway Bay this weekend with a shot at becoming the champion futsal school of Australasia.

Rivals Toowoomba Grammar and Downlands have both qualified for the prestigious Champion of Champions tournament, which will be contested by the best futsal sides from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and New Zealand.

Downslands’ senior side will be contesting the under-19 championships, while TGS will be sending their highly promising under-15 futsal side.

Both schools qualified for the tournament after winning the Southern Queensland Championships in August in convincing style, Downlands winning their final 5-1, TGS winning theirs 6-2.

These results have given both sides confidence they can go on to bigger and better things this weekend.

Downlands’ head football coach Chris McPherson said his side had enjoyed a very successful year and winning the Champion of Champions tournament would be the perfect way to cap it all off.

“It would be a great way to send off the year 12 boys,” McPherson said.

“The side is very experienced, they’ve been playing together the past four or five years and training together for three or four months and we’re quietly confident.”

Opposition teams will have to be on the lookout for Tobias Ackerlind, a Swedish foreign exchange student who joined the side only months ago.

“He’ll be a hit – he scored about half our goals at the Southern Queensland Championships,” McPherson said.

TGS also boast a hugely talented side which includes Queensland and Australian futsal representatives.

“We went through the state finals undefeated and our side has been strengthened since then,” TGS head of football Chris McLeod said.

“Winning is the ambition.”
