Camden Haven CourierAustralasian Futsal champions03 Nov, 2010IN what can only be described as a monumental underdog story, Camden Haven High School has become the undisputed Australasian Futsal champions of 2010. In the recent three day Vikings Futsal Champions of Champions tournament held at Runaway Bay Gold Coast, the Camden Haven High School U/19’s boy’s team were able to cement their status as the best Australasian Futsal team in their golden goal, extra time victory against Downlands College from Toowoomba.
The boys showed their tactical skill and teamwork throughout the three day tournament with wins against Rockhampton Grammar, Duval High School and Gympie High School. They also had two entertaining and hard fought draws against Miller College and the New Zealand Lindwood College.
After finishing fourth in the pool games, the team lifted again in the semi-finals defeating the first placed New Zealand Lindwood College 4-3. The team had to come from behind with 2 minutes left in normal time before Daniel Trompert volleyed into the top corner to take it into golden goal extra time. One minute into extra time Lachlan Sessions was able to cement a position in the grand final with a strike into the bottom corner. Will Bennett was once again simply brilliant in goals, frustrating the opposition with his cat-like reflexes and dynamic saves and Tom Robinson’s presence on the ball led to some crucial forays into the opposition’s half.
The Camden Haven side then had to prepare for the grand final game against Downlands College who had defeated them that morning in the last of the preliminary games 7-2. The exhausting nature of the tournament meant that most boys were carrying injuries at this stage yet the determination and will to win was evident in the final game. After going a goal up in the first half courtesy of Sam Ward, Camden Haven then found themselves 2-1 down. Sam Ryan was then able to score a fast finishing goal to even up the game. With 3 minutes to go in the second half Camden Haven was again one goal down, until after a time out, Sam Ward was able to beat two players and tie the game up. In the ensuing golden goal extra time, Jake Geary finished off another tactical play by volleying into the right hand bottom corner. Camden Haven High School had become Futsal Champions of 2010.
In the ensuing pandemonium, the true extent of their achievements became evident. This Public High School, who had been given a wild card entry into the Vikings tournament, had just defeated the best teams in Australasia. This well deserved victory by a great group of boys will be remembered for a long time to come!
Sam Ward and Daniel Trompert were further honoured by being selected in the all-star team to tour Brazil. The U/16’s boys team also competed successfully being ranked 6th in these Australasian titles which once again shows the depth of talent at Camden Haven High School.
