Indoor soccer glory for Roxby Downs

05 Nov, 2010

The cream of Roxby’s indoor soccer league won the inaugural Port Augusta Futsal Tournament on Saturday.

The tournament invited teams from country towns to compete against local teams and teams made up of people from the Life Without Barriers program, giving the tournament a very multinational feel.

Roxby’s team continued this trend with players representing four continents.

The seven that made up the Roxby side were Tom Merrie, Anthony Watherston, Adam Shabooti, Emmanuel Ofori, John Anastasopoulos, Jonathan Chislett and Daniel Neyland.

In the first stage the 10 competing teams were split into two groups of five, and in the four group games Roxby managed to concede the fewest goals and score the most, racking up 41 goals in the process.

Highlights included Merrie’s quick feet allowing him to easily lead the scoring, often with solo efforts, and Anastasopoulos twice scoring length-of-the-court rockets.

The entire team contributed with everyone getting on the scoreboard and putting in on the defensive side as well, the full court press often leading to goals from opposition mistakes.

By the time the semi-final came, bodies were getting sore and the cold weather wasn’t helping the situation.

The final was a repeat of an earlier group game, but this time was a much tighter match.

Down to only six players, the Roxby Blues managed to hold their structure to take it out 6-2, all without a recognised goalkeeper in the team.

They are looking forward to defending their crown next time.
