Ireland progress at Deaf Futsal Championships

Wednesday, 10 November 2010

The Irish Deaf Futsal recorded a first-ever clean sheet in competitive action on Tuesday as they ran riot in their second European Championship group game against Cyprus in Switzerland.

Ireland, having already recorded an 8-5 victory over Belarus in their opening group match, scored 12 goals against the Cypriots in a very one-sided encounter.

Cyprus were no match for the Irish, who maintained an intense pace from start to finish with Joe Watson, a junior international player, grabbing a haul of seven goals.

Irish coach Gleudson Junior was delighted with the performance, complimenting his team on the control they exerted over the game.

He said: 'We were very patient and we took our chances very well. When the score was 7-0, it afforded me the opportunity to rotate the players to prevent injuries and also to provide our other players with some valuable international experience.'

The Brazilian also praised the team for their attitude, discipline and the manner in which they recorded a clean sheet without picking up any bookings.

Ireland can now look forward to Wednesday's final group match against the Netherlands.

With qualification already assured, the game will dictate which country Ireland will face in the next round.
