Queensland TimesFutsal club appeals for players12th November 2010EVERY year it gets harder.
Which is why the Ipswich Warriors Indoor Soccer club is appealing for more players and teams to contest it’s next summer indoor football competition, starting Wednesday.
At it’s peak about five years ago, the club fielded two open men’s competitions of 12 teams each and a 16-team junior competition.
A month ago, the coming season looked like it might not happen with only three senior men’s teams nominated. The word was put out and there are now seven teams ready to go but the more the merrier.
The five-a-side competition, with up to four substitutes, will unfold at Ipswich Girls Grammar School Sports Hall each Wednesday evening. Warriors committee member Michael Beelitz blames the increased commitments faced by players as they get older as the reason for the futsal competition’s decline.
“There is also a bit more competition from Swifts and Collingwood Park (where indoor football competitions are held),” he said.
“At the start of each new season, we wonder if we’re actually going to go with it. We’re lucky we have enough teams. The regular guys spread the word and got some younger kids involved.
“It is the younger kids the future of the competition will rest on, though with the increased competition for their time from other football comps, different sports and social factors, it is not easy.”
Anyone interested in playing in the upcoming season can call club president Shirley Forman on 0402 819 471 or Michael Beelitz on 0409 796 667 or email Beelitz at michbeelitz@hotmail.com.
