Zanzeer SinghTuesday, November 16, 2010THE 4R Electrical side took out the Sun Insurance/Devan P Sharma-sponsored open futsal championship at the newly-built futsal court in Ba on Sunday.
The 4R Electrical team, which had district reps Roneel Kumar and Aisea Codro, thrashed Masters 5-1 in the final.
Fiji Football Association academy manager Chandra Segran said this was the first championship played at the newly-built facility which was inaugurated by Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Win in Oceania senior project manager Vairani Davio last month.
He said the one-day meet was a success.
"A total of 10 teams participated," Segran said. "There was a good turnout with the fans enjoying the fast-paced games. The players displayed good skills. There are plans to run more tournaments."
Segran said they hoped to organise a futsal league next year. "We plan to organise a futsal league since the interest is high. Some sponsors have indicated their willingness to support the event. Having a regular competition will give us a chance to help the development of futsal."
"There was overwhelming response for the opening tournament," the former FIFA referee said.
