Wicked Local CambridgeExperience soccer for kids in CambridgeNov 23, 2010 Cambridge — The Cambridge War Memorial Recreation Center and the AC Arlington Soccer Club are offering a winter soccer experience for boys and girls ages 5 to 14.
Indoor soccer, or futsal, is played in an environment with an emphasis on skill development and fun. Young soccer players will learn the game, develop faster, and stay sharp for outdoor spring soccer playing in an environment that encourages maximum touches of the ball and reinforces their basic soccer skills.
No futsal experience is necessary. Instruction is provided by experienced, soccer instructors for each age group. All basic soccer skills are covered. Instructions cover individual and team skills. Session time is split 50-50 between skill building through drills and small-sided, controlled games. The focus is on learning and having fun.
In futsal, players use a heavier ball to prevent them from kicking the ball the full length of the field in one kick. This also gives players an increased focus on passing, footwork and ball control. If the ball goes out of bounds in the small-sided scrimmages, the controlling team has only five seconds to put the ball back into play with a sideline kick-in. Goal and corner kicks apply and there is no off-sides rule. This format makes for fast-paced play, lots of goal scoring, and a high level of participation for players.
The program will be held Saturdays from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Cambridge War Memorial Recreation Center at 1640 Cambridge St. The dates are Jan. 8, Jan. 15, Jan. 22, Jan. 29, Feb. 5, Feb. 12, Feb. 19, Feb. 26, March 5 and March 19. The cost is $150 for Cambridge residents and $200 for non-residents. To register, call AC Arlington at 617-669-5585 or e-mail chemack@aol.com.
