AFC Futsal Team of the Year: Iran

Wednesday, 24 November 2010

Kuala Lumpur: Iran have won the AFC Futsal Team of the Year Award in recognition of their triumph in the AFC Futsal Championship 2010.

The Asian futsal powerhouse sealed their 10th continental title in 11 years with an 8-3 victory over hosts Uzbekistan in the final at the Uzbekistan Sports Complex in Tashkent back in May, while Japan took third with a 6-1 hammering of China.

AFC and FIFA Executive Committee member Junji Ogura, who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee for AFC Youth Competitions, presented the award to Iran's head of futsal Abbas Torabian.

Torabian said: “It was completely clear from the beginning that we would win it. We have after all won the title 10 times out of 11.

“Now we have to do what I promised on the stage: get into the final of the FIFA Futsal World Cup with Brazil. We have to do this for Asia as the continent’s representative.”

Torabian said Iran’s dominance was not surprising.

“We have three teams – U19, U23 and the senior team. So we have a steady supply of players,” said Torabian, who felt Iran’s superiority could only spur others to better their performance.
