Record week for Castlebar college

Sunday, 28 November 2010

A Connaught title, two county semi-final wins, a sizzling soccer victory and a record-breaking win on the Gaelic field ensured the Davitt College sporting stars created their own type of history over the past seven days. The hard work being put in by students, teachers and coaches paid off in spectacular fashion in venues from Galway to Killala as the Greens swept all before them. The Connaught girls futsal finals took place in NUIG on Thursday and Davitt College won the title for the second year in a row. Ballygar from Galway were beaten 6-1 in the opening game before the girls played a 0-0 draw with Elphin. The next game saw them beat Lough Allen 2-0 before playing out another 0-0 draw with Ursuline from Sligo to send them into the final against Elphin.

In the decider, goals from Cheyenne McHale and Claire McDonagh gave Davitt College the title amid scenes of great excitement.
The squad consisted of Clare McDonagh, Laura Brody, Aoife Broady, Hannah McHale, Orla Fahy, Caoimhe Kilkenny, Cheyeenane McHale, Kelly Roache, Niamh O'Reilly, Jessica Kenny, Sinead Dyra and Cliondhna Barrett.

Action on the GAA pitch was equally impressive. In the Under 16 boys county semi-final Davitt were made work very hard against a strong team from St. Brendan's, Belmullet, in Bofeenaun.

Even though conditions were difficult, both teams served up a cracker before Davitt College came through 2-11 to 3-6. The Castlebar scholars now go forward to the county final where they will play St. Tiernan's of Crossmolina.

In the senior semi-final in Killala the boys in green enjoyed an impressive win over Lacken Cross. In appalling weather conditions, the defending Connaught champions took full advantage of the gale at their backs in the opening period and led 6-7 to 0-1 at the break.
From then on it was a case of crowding the Davitt defence and forcing the opposition to shoot from far out the field. Davitt themselves kept the score board ticking over also despite the stormy conditions and ran out comprehensive winners on a scoreline of 9-10 to 2-3.
Best performers for Davitt College on the day were Sean Staunton, Brian Murphy, Robbie Fadden, Paul Colleran, Conor Finnerty and Brendan Burke.

Next up for the Davitt boys is a potentially tough encounter against St. Tiernan's College, Crossmolina, in the county senior final.
The Under 16 girls Gaelic team recorded a huge win over McHale College from Achill. The Castlebar side faced the breeze in the first half and were 7-7 to 1-0 ahead at the break. They were even better after the resumption to record their third win of the competition by a record margin.

On the soccer pitch the Under 16 girls continued their Connaught campaign with a stunning 4-1 win over Belmullet in Celtic Park. The Davitt goals came from the excellent Orlaith Walshe, who got one in either half, Shaunagh Maloney and Hannah McHale.

Davitt College now play St. Mary's College, Ballisodare, or St. Claire's Comprehensive, Manorhamilton, in the Connaught semi final.
The Davitt College team was Kirstin Sheerin, Bethany Duffy, Michelle Kelly, Cheyenne McHale, Melissa Patterson, Shauna Maloney, Danielle Caldwell, Anna Tully, Erina Flannery, Claire McDonagh, Orlaith Walshe. Subs used: Maria Staunton, Hannah McHale and Anna Feeney.
