Futsal star set to head abroad

DYLAN McClelland is at the top of his game for a 14-year-old.

After a standout performance for the Queensland Country team at the National Futsal Championships, he was selected to tour the UK as part of the Australian team.

Futsal, or indoor soccer, is one of Australia’s fastest growing sports and McClelland is over the moon about his selection.

“I was in shock when I opened the letter,” McClelland said.

“I dropped the letter.”

The Gympie State High School student had set his sights on the Australian team after a being selected in the Queensland Country side.

“It’s been a dream – I have always wanted to represent Australia,” he said.

McClelland normally plays striker or midfield in his Diggers outdoor football side, but said he played a key role in defence for the Queensland Country side.

“I didn’t score many,” he said.

But he did do enough to earn a green and gold jersey and a trip to the UK.

The cost of the trip is more than $6000.

Now McClelland and his parents Tim and Jennie are raising money for the trip.

Gympie Glazing has come on board as McClelland’s major sponsor and is hosting The Gympie Glazing Works Cup at the Albert Park Bowls Club on December 10.

The gates open for the event at 6pm and racing starts at 7pm.

Tickets for the mock race day cost $10 and patrons are urged to dress in a beach theme.

There will be prizes for Fashions on the Field.

Michael Harch from Gympie Glazing said he came on board as a sponsor because he liked to see talented kids get a go.

“We just like to back someone who is going places,” Harch said.

Anybody interested in helping McClelland by sponsoring a horse in The Gympie Glazing Works Cup, or donating funds, can contact Tim on 0448 015 862 or Jenny on 0448 015 763.

Tickets for the race day can be purchased at Gympie Glazing Works.
