Daily ExaminerGiant killers finish fourth 30th November 2010MACLEAN High School’s giant-killing under-16 girls futsal side has finally met its match – but still came away with fourth at the 2010 Australian Champion of Champions tournament.
The Mark Ohlmus-managed squad, featuring Maddy Ryan, Zoe Duncombe, Taylor Power-Casson, Rachael Anderson, Neesa Doyle, Jessica Gunning, Jemma Beamer and Ruby Eno, eased into the event with a comprehensive regional title triumph.
First the girls swept the Northern NSW Champion of Champions tournament in Coffs Harbour in August, downing Bellingen High 6-3 in the decider.
Next, on to Runaway Bay in late-October for the national Champion of Champions and matches with Australia’s leading teams.
“They were deservedly privileged to play against other quality teams from high schools around Australia,” Ohlmus said.
“The Sydney and Brisbane metro contingents proved to be Maclean’s toughest opponents.
“And although our girls played consistently well over the three days we were finally placed fourth, narrowly missing the finals on goal average.”
Ryan, Power-Casson, Anderson, Gunning, Beamer and Eno were then chosen in the Northern NSW State team.
