Big Apple SoccerLong Island Futsal LeagueThe winter of 2011 is the 15th anniversary of the LIFL. Last winter, nearly 200 LIJSL teams competed in the league, which traditionally has played in gyms in the Selden-Centereach area but with plans to expand this season to Westbury and Riverhead. The LIFL has grown to be the second largest futsal league in the country, and the level of play has increased so that many local teams can now compete at the highest level. There have been recent regional champions and a national champion from the LIFL, the GU15 DV Crush in 2009. Games will be played on weekends throughout January and February. Futsal has a rich history, dating to its origins in 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay, when Juan Carlos Ceriani devised a five-a-side version of soccer for youth competition in YMCAs.
