Chris GeorgakopoulosWEST City Crusaders under-14 boys’ futsal team is on its way to a minor premiership after finishing second from the bottom last season.
The team remains undefeated in the Futsal Super League.
Club president Warren Ladd believes the boys are destined for success.
“They’re absolutely dynamic at the moment,” Ladd said.
“They started the season with a 3-3 draw against the Northern Tigers but since then they have won nine matches.
“Their coach Nick Verdos has done a fantastic job jelling the boys as a team and doing what they need to do on the court.
“To be honest I think they could give some of the older grades a good run.”
Verdos has been shocked by the huge turnaround.
“I took over the team last season and we didn’t fare too well,” he said.
“But I am very happy and proud with how the boys are going here.
“I actually didn’t expect the results to go this way so early.”
In contrast to the under-14 boys’ team’s success, the under-12 girls have been doing it tough.
Ladd says the girls’ program is a little different.
“Although it is important to pick up club championship points, we have emphasised that it is not only about winning for the girls,” he said.
“We aim to develop the girls at such a young age.
“We also have to remember that most of them are under the age of 12 and playing up, so it will be a more difficult for them.”
