Daily ExpressLanun FC win UMS Invitational Futsal ChampionshipThursday, December 16, 2010Kota Kinabalu: Lanun FC prevented Quilmes from completing their domination of futsal competitions this season, after emerging as champion of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Invitational Futsal Championship 2010, Tuesday.
The tournament, which was held at the Borneo Sports Arena in Kolombong, Inanam, saw Lanun FC winning the final, 3-0 against the resilient Quilmes.
Another Quilmes outfit, Quilmes 2000 was also left reeling after being forced to settle for fourth place following their 1-2 defeat against team Akbul in the 3rd/4th place classification match.
The Quilmes teams are no strangers among the local to futsal teams.
Having dominated most tournaments throughout the season, the change in winners is a welcoming sign for tournament organisers.
"More teams are now capable of winning tournaments and this augurs well for the sports development. It is a healthy sign that the sport is progressing well.
"Competitive rivalry among teams will help develop the sport more effectively," said organising chairman, Azman Soaibah.
Azman said that tournament organisers play an important role of providing events in which teams can compete and the, he added, was part of UMS' efforts to help develop the sport in the State.
He said UMS was also using the tournament as a platform for selecting players to represent the varsity for future tournaments at local, state and national levels.
A total of eight teams took part in the tournament, which began early this month.
As champions of the tournament, Lanun FC received RM500 for their efforts, while Quilmes took home RM400.
Third and fourth place received RM200 and RM100 respectively, while all winners also received trophies, medals and balls.
Zulfadhi Fikri Azizan represented the UMS Sports Unit Chief at the prize ceremony.
