Double win for Boro to end 2010 on a high

Sunday, 19 December 2010

Middlesbrough Futsal Club wrapped up 2010 on a high with a double win away in Leeds on Sunday. The newly formed under-18s team played their first ever game and won 6-2, while the first team, with no less than 6 debutants, put their league defeat behind them with a 7-3 win.

The under-18s have been formed over the last month with open trials and the trip to Leeds represented the end of that successful process and a chance to give the youngsters their first experience of competitive futsal. A team of 11 travelled which included first team players Mikey Roberts filling in in goal and Josh Philips, who was captaining the side. The full squad was: Mikey Roberts, Jake Large, Rob Jenkins, Josh Philips (c), Charlie Raby, Inteshar Mahbub, Harvey Swann, Ryan Harker, Ryan Todd, Bradley Mills and Jamie Blyth.

It was Philips' first futsal of the season having missed all of Boro's opening three league games and he was raring to go, scoring two and setting up one for Jamie Blyth in the first half. His ability on the ball was causing Leeds all sorts of trouble as he dictated play.

Rob Jenkins, Josh Philips and Jamie Blyth could be picked out as top performers, but in reality, despite having only trained three times, the whole team looked natural and put in a good solid performance to kick off their existence and a 6-2 win.

The first team also played with a team missing a few experienced faces, but it was a good chance for others to get minutes under their belt. Mikey Roberts, Josh Philips and Virun all coming into the side to play their first futsal of the season.

Immy Rashid opened his account and put in a good solid performance which will hopefully bode well for 2011 and Mikey Roberts got himself back on the scoresheet with help from Sean O'Brien.

Five of the under-18s made their first team bows and Ryan Harker managed to score with his first touch! He was in the right place as the Leeds keeper saved and he finished with his head. Rob Jenkins set one up and Jake Large hit the post crowning an all round good day for the younger players and for the club as a whole.

It was a perfect way to end 2010 and the future looks bright for Middlesbrough Futsal Club.
