More futsal courts for the country

January 7, 2011, Friday

KUCHING: More futsal courts will be built in the country to meet the growing popularity of the sport among the youths.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek who gave this assurance, said his ministry was planning at least two futsal courts in every state constituency.

“It’s easy and cheap to build futsal courts but harder and costlier to build them in Sarawak because of the soil and geographical conditions,” he said after playing a futsal friendly between the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Sarawak Youth Leaders at Arena Sukan yesterday.

There are now 147 futsal courts in the country under the ministry.

Ahmad Shabery led the ministry’s players while Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Fadillah Yusof and Assistant Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation (Youth Affairs and Training) Larry Sng led the Sarawak team which won the match 4-2.

It was part of the activities organised in conjunction with Karnival Mesra Belia Sarawak from Jan 6 to 8.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Shabery will attend a committee meeting today on the Youth and Sports Development Act with officials from the Youth and Sports Ministry, and their Sarawak and Sabah counterparts.

He will also attend the Youth and Sports Icon Awards presentation in the afternoon and a bowling friendly with the media in the evening.
