Henderson among the goals

EMERGING Hills soccer star Emily Henderson has returned from a national competition as the top goal scorer for her age group.

Henderson, who plays for the Perth Hills Soccer Club, was part of a WA under-14 team to head to Canberra earlier this month for the FFA Futsal National Championships.

The event attracted about 2000 competitors from across Australia, as well as several Oceanic nations.

While the WA team missed out on playing in the finals, Henderson (13) finished the tournament with nine goals, including hat-tricks in two of her matches.

Her mother Kaye Weldon said teams from New South Wales, which train all year round, dominated the competition against sides such as WA, which train for one term a year.

Futsal is indoor soccer played fast and furious on a smaller pitch than field soccer.

The Canberra tournament was Henderson’s second interstate trip.

She was also part of an under-13 national team to go to Vietnam in July last year for competition.

“She has been playing soccer since she was in Year 1 and she is definitely serious about it,” Ms Weldon said.

She said Henderson, who generally plays left wing or striker, hoped to gain selection for an elite training program with Football West.
