YAMBA youngster Cameron Ramsay has been selected to represent the Australian Vikings 14-year-old futsal team for a tour of the Spanish city of Barcelona later this year, and will jump at the opportunity as long as his family can raise the necessary travel funds of $14,000.

If success is all about determination then Ramsay is certainly showing the right pedigree.

He was selected for the Barcelona tour based on his “exemplary ability” displayed at National Club Futsal Titles held earlier this year.

Remarkably, his success in this form of the game came just months after he failed to make the cut for the North Coast representative outdoor soccer team.

Even though a couple of mates were selected in that squad Ramsay never became bitter or negative about not being selected.

“He just got on with it and had a go at futsal,” said Ramsay’s mother Trish.

“I never thought I’d see him go from outdoor to indoor,” but mentors at futsal, including Jo Powell from the Vikings, have been able “to bring out his passion”, Trish said.

The October tour to Barcelona will involve watching La Liga soccer games and training at the La Liga Futsal Club, as well as playing against local Spanish futsal clubs.

“I’ve never been overseas, I’m really looking forward to it,” Ramsay said.

“I enjoy futsal better than outdoor soccer, I like the rules.”

Ramsay has no regrets at all about making the change to futsal and will keep at it this year. He intends to play alongside his dad with the Yamba Breakers open futsal team.

The Ramsay family is looking to raise $14,000 for two places on the tour. One for Ramsay, and because he hasn’t travelled on his own before, one for a parent to accompany him.

Trish said they hoped to raise the money through a decent fund-raiser that could involve a “celebrity” soccer game.
