Kate Butler04 Feb, 2011IT's a short, sharp game but Futsal has lengthened its season.
Rather than run in school terms like last year, the 2011 competition at Action Fitness will only break once, in the middle of the year.
"This year we made the change rather than having four terms, we took it to two so it will be played through Easter and be played through September," Action reception manager Narelle Brooks said.
"It just gives the kids something to do in the holidays."
Futsal, which starts within the next fortnight, offers two junior grades and two senior grades.
It is hoped the competition will grow.
"We're really trying to push it this year," Brooks said.
"Last year was probably a teething year, we trialled a few things and then made some changes this year.
"We're really hoping to get some schools involved and other sporting groups.
"A lot of footy players do it for preseason training, they love coming down.
"It's good fitness."
People are able to enter their own teams while individual entries are also accepted.
"We're happy to have people turn up at any time in the season and we'll be able to slot them into a team," Brooks said.
"We won't be turning people away."
Brooks said that several players had a soccer background but encouraged people who were looking to try something new to have a go at the indoor sport.
"It's a short, sharp game," she said.
"It's good for kids to stay active . . . and it's only $6 a game."
The senior division one kicks off on Monday while the division two mixed grade begins Wednesday.
The under 12 and under 15 competitions start the following week on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
