Thursday, 03 March 2011

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Department of Youth and Sports (JBS) B won two matches to top the veteran category of the inaugural Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Futsal Challenge Trophy last night.

Hamdan and Salleh kicked off JBS B's campaign strongly by beating History Centre 2-0 in their first match at the Multipurpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

The duo were also right on target in their second match of the night, scoring a goal each against JBS A to reign at the top of the five-team table with six points.

At joint-second are History Centre and Museum, both holding a similar one win and one loss record, each with three goals scored and two goals conceded.

History Centre kicked off the veteran category last night by crushing the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (KKBS) 3-0.

Supree fired a brace while teammate Ahmad Yani added to the tally.

Meanwhile Museum started off on the wrong foot when they were edged 2-1 by fourth place JBS A. Jaya's goal was not enough to secure Museum a victory, denied by a double from Tahir of JBS A.

However, Museum did not have to lift a single finger to secure their sole victory of the night, granted a walkover win against bottom dwellers KKBS.

The remaining matches of the veteran category will resume on Monday, before the semi-finals and final are contested on March 11.

Over in the Group A open category, it was JBS B again that made the headline when five players got romp away with a resounding win. Zulhilmy scored DBP's sole goal of the night.

JBS A, on the other hand, were unable to emulate their namesakes' impressive form.

The team drew to a 0-0 stalemate against KKBS in the only Group B open match.

Eleven teams divided into two groups are currently vying for the inaugural trophy.

Group A consist of DBP A, Community Development Department (JAPEM) A, JBS B and History Centre A. Meanwhile the six teams in Group B are History Centre B, JAPEM B, JBS C, JBS A, DBP B and the KKBS.

Among the objectives of the competition is to further foster and strengthen the relationships between staff and officers of the different departments under KKBS.

It is also aimed towards improving their physical and mental health, at the same time promoting a healthy lifestyle via sports.

The championship is also an opportunity for the KKBS to scout for potential players who may one day represent the ministry in future futsal and football tournaments at the department, ministry and national levels.
