The Mississauga NewsPanthers win futsal titleMar 03, 2011Not many teams can boast they’ve won a whopping 24 championships in five years.
The North Mississauga Soccer Club Girls U13 rep team can.
The squad accomplished the remarkable feat last Sunday by capturing the 2011 Ontario Futsal Cup – justifying its No. 1 ranking.
The championship tilt featured the Panthers and Unionville Milliken, whom they nipped in the preliminary game. A strong start saw Mississauga go out to an early 4-0 lead with Samantha Worthman and Roselyn Kyeame each chipping in two goals.
However, before the half ended, Unionville Milliken clawed back to make it 4-1. The east-end girls came out to play in the second half and quickly brought the score to 4-2.
Kyeame finished her hat trick, but Unionville replied to keep it close at 5-3. With three minutes left in the game, Selena Benvenuto got the Panthers’ sixth goal. A shift in the defensive formation closed the door on Unionville Milliken to give the Mississaugans provincial honours. Final score was 6-3.
Saturday, the Panthers won all three of their preliminary games to finish first in their group, qualifying them for the final. They beat Oshawa Kicks 7-1, Unionville Milliken 5-4 and Oshawa Turul 6-3.
The team is made up of Worthman, Kyeame, Benvenuto, Brianna Walbridge, Tracy Pizarro-Steffler, Michelle Travassos, Janine Kanji, Anastasia Corkill, Rebecca Spratt, Drea Millar, Kimberly Loaiza-Ramirez, Olivia Di Cristofaro, Lindsay Burigana, Gurjeena Jandu, Rylee Foster, Lenny Yekka and Megan Pedersen.
