Brazil will play Thailand in October

Coach promises to bring best team to celebrate King's birthday

5/03/2011

Brazil will play a friendly with the Thai national team in Bangkok in October as part of the celebrations of His Majesty the King's 84th birthday, the Thai FA chief said yesterday.

Worawi Makudi, president of the Football Association of Thailand, said his Brazilian counterpart Ricardo Teixeira had promised to send the country's top players to the Kingdom for the October 7 match.

Worawi, who is a Fifa executive member, discussed the matter with Teixeira in Zurich where they are attending Fifa's annual meeting.

"Teixeira promised that he will send Brazil's strongest team to Thailand for the friendly," said Worawi.

"This is good news for Thai fans. It will also be a good opportunity for Thai players to play against world-class players.

Also, the Brazilian Football Confederation will send its national futsal (five-a-side) to compete in a special event in Thailand in June, Worawi said.

Worawi is asking Spain to play Brazil in the event which is aimed to promote the 2012 Fifa World Futsal Cup to be held in Thailand.

Worawi is also inviting legendary footballers Pele and Franz Beckenbauer to join the promotional event which is expected to be held between June 14 and 17.

The function will also be the beginning of the official countdown to the 2012 futsal championship.

West Bank test
Thailand are ready to take on Palestine in the West Bank in an Olympic qualifying tie next Wednesday.

Thailand edged Palestine 1-0 in the first leg of the preliminary round tie in Bangkok last week.

Worawi Makudi, president of the Football Association of Thailand, had asked for the second leg to take place in a neutral ground for safety reasons but his request was turned down.

Thailand manager Kasem Jariyawatwong said yesterday he had only one injured player in goalkeeper Ukrit Wongmeema.

The team will leave tonight for Jordan and then go to the West Bank by bus. The match will kick off at 6pm local time and the weather is expected to be around 10 degrees Celsius.

Kasem said the team will bring rice and dried food as well as cooking equipment with them.

"Our morale is good. We are ready to fight. I am confident that we will keep a clean sheet and go through to the next round," he said.

But he is worried about the match officials who are from Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

"With Middle East officials, we may be at a disadvantage. I have told my players to stay focused and control their temper," Kasem said.
