Fitzpatrick Workouts A-Z: Futsal

Getting Your Kicks In A Non-Soccer-Type

Think freestyle soccer. Athletes around the world have played futsal for years. It's now becoming quite popular in the U.S. as both a cross-training exercise for soccer and as a general workout for everyone else.

The game is played indoors on a basketball court. The ball is smaller and heavier than a regulation soccer ball. That means there is less bounce and therefore the ball is constantly in play.

Expect to run hard. Then, plan on running harder.

Soccer players say futsal works on their ball-handling ability. On a regular soccer field, players get a few seconds to rest between plays. But, there's virtually no downtime in futsal.

Tricks are a big deal too. In many parts of the world, you'll see players performing futsal tricks competition style.

Not into soccer? No problem. A futsal fitness class is a great way to shake up your workout routine while getting a good dose of cardio and core at the same time.

Check out drop-in futsal Thursdays at the California Family Fitness in Rocklin. The gym offers leagues, drop-in play and fitness classes.
