Teams ready for Futsal action

Friday, 11 March, 2011

20 university and college sides primed for BUCS Futsal Championship.

On Monday 14 March, 20 men’s Futsal teams will descend on the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield to compete in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Futsal Championship over three exciting days of competition.

After qualifying through regional Leagues that were played between October and February, teams will take each other on in four groups of five teams on Monday and Tuesday, with the knock out matches on the Wednesday.

Now in its fourth season, the BUCS Futsal Championship is a magnificent opportunity to watch the most talented young players in the country showcasing their ability at a high level. With over half of the current England Futsal squad coming through the BUCS programme, there will be some current England internationals on show with many more talented players looking to use the event as an opportunity to impress and stake a claim for an England call up.

BUCS and The FA have been working closely to develop the game at a participation level and at a performance level.

BUCS Football Development Manager George Carney said: “Each year the standard of the teams has got better with players understanding of the game and tactics significantly improving.

“The Championships is a superb event and enjoyed by all the students that take part and is reward for a lot of hard work by universities who have put in a lot of development work to raise the profile of the game.”

Teams to watch out for this year include Loughborough and Bath who can still call upon many players from their FA National League squads, while last year’s finalists, Teesside and UWE Hartpury, go head to head again in the ‘group of death’.

Leeds Met and Brighton take each other on in Group Two in a repeat of last year’s Trophy Final, but every team will fancy their chances of going the distance and winning some silverware.
