TEAM Vatica FC of Universiti Putra Malaysia emerged champion of the inter-varsity Datuk Haji Suhaimy Futsal Tournament recently when it beat Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI)’s team Unimax FC 2-0 in the final match of the higher learning institutions (IPTA/IPTS) category.

The match started off with a goalless draw in the first half. However, an accidental goal by Vatica goalkeeper Mohd Riduan Mohamad – whose powerful throw of the ball saw the back of the opponent’s net – spurred the team on to score the second goal just a minute later.

Meanwhile, in the open category, Taman Pertanian University FC won by beating Team Standard Kampung FC 4-3 by a penalty shoot-out.

Members of the winning teams received cash prizes, holiday packages from Natasya Resort Genting Highlands, shoes sponsored by Figos and hampers.

UPM deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Prof Dr Mohd Fauzi Ramlan presented the prizes at the closing ceremony.

In his speech, Prof Mohd Fauzi said he was glad the tournament was organised and hoped it would be continued in the future.

“Sports not only encourage a spirit of fraternity in the student community, it also encourages team spirit and cooperation,” he said.

A total of 64 teams participated in the three-day tournament, which was held at UPM, Serdang.
