Bromsgrove StandardYoungsters set to star on TV17 MarchBROMSGROVE Futsal Club were joined by television sports presenter Mike Bushell to film a short piece about futsal which will be broadcast on BBC Breakfast this weekend.
Bushell was invited by manager Neil Davies to join the under 8 and under 11 squads while they trained at Waseley Hills High School on Monday night as part of a regular slot where he tries out new sports.
Futsal has its origins in Spain, Portugal and the Americas, and is short for Futbol de Salao (Hall football). It is credited for the increased technical abilities of many of the world’s greatest teams and players.
Futsal is hugely popular in mainland Europe and is played by full time professional teams in several countries, including Football World Cup holders Spain. By comparison, England sit around 95th in the World rankings (out of 100).
Futsal is played indoors between teams of five. That is where the similarities with traditional 5-a-side end though, as amongst other things the ball is smaller and has less bounce, the pitch is lined, the ball can go out of play and is allowed to go above head height.
The effect is that players have to focus on skills, possession and picking up their head so that they can find team mates.
During the training session Bushell did some basic ball skills work, interviewed several of the players and then took part in a game with the under 11s. You can see all of this on BBC Breakfast this Saturday morning, usually after the news at 8.30am.
