New AFC ExCo looks ahead to future with confidence

Kuala Lumpur: The AFC Executive Committee, elected in January for the term 2011-2015, met for the first time here at AFC House on Thursday under the chairmanship of AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam and set the tone for the future by resolving to work together for the good of the Asian game.

The elections in January saw Bin Hammam being given a third four-year term at the helm unopposed while 10 new members joined the body alongside 12 members who were re-elected.

At the very outset, the AFC Executive Committee came together as one in expressing their great sadness at the tragedy that has struck Japan.

Bin Hammam led the way in paying tributes to the East Asian country by calling for a minute of silence for the victims of the earthquake, tsunami and now a feared nuclear meltdown.

“Thousands of lives have been lost in Japan and the damage to property runs into millions. Our friends in the Japan Football Association and the people of Japan have AFC’s full support and sympathy,” said Bin Hammam.

AFC Executive Committee member Dr Hafez Al Medlej said: “AFC is one big family and we feel what our brothers and sisters in Japan are feeling. Our thoughts are with them.”

The AFC President stressed AFC’s democratic values and principles and invited all the members – old and new – to play their role to boost Asian football.

“Please play your role according to the power granted to you by the statutes in administering and running AFC,” said Bin Hammam, who added that the democratic principle of the majority voice prevailing over the minority would be followed.

The committee then decided on the names of the chairmen and vice-chairmen who would lead the various standing committees (see below for complete list) for the next four years. It was unanimously decided to appoint a subcommittee comprising the AFC President, FIFA Vice-President and AFC Vice-Presidents to select the members. It was also decided to separate the Vision Asia and Technical Committees into two separate committees for better focus.

The committee then debated the proposed amendment to the AFC Code of Ethics and adopted it as well as the minutes of the 24th AFC Congress held in Doha. The members put in a big round of applause when they learnt about the big numbers and grand success of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™.

The President accepted a suggestion from new member Winston Lee that an orientation course be held for all committees to acquaint them with the procedures and processes of AFC meetings.

The members also approved the appointment of Susan Shalabi of Palestine as a co-opted female member to the committee from West Asia.

The AID 27 funding was increased to USD 200,000 for every eligible Member Association and an Adhoc Committee for AID27 Funding was set up to monitor the mechanism for disbursal of funds and its use. FIFA Executive Committee member Manilal Fernando will chair this body while Sayyid Khalid Hamed Al Busaidi will be the vice-chairman.

It was also decided to place Japan in position 5 of their group for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers (final round-Asia) to avert a clash with the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup (June 16-30). Now Japan will have a rest day on June 18 in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers (final round-Asia) that will enable the Asian champions to play in the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Bin Hammam also informed the AFC Executive Committee that he would be standing for the FIFA President’s election and the announcement was greeted with applause. Several members expressed their support to the AFC chief in his endeavour.
