Inter-zone futsal meet April 22-24

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah FA Inter-Zone Futsal Championship would be held from April 22-24, said Sabah FA Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee Chairman, Yamani Hafiz Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

He said the tournament would have the Open and Under-20 categories.

"There will be two main categories in this year's championship and we want to encourage all zones to give their full participation to help make this tournament successful.

"We are inviting all zones to send two representing teams for each of the categories, which will have a Men's and Women's competition each," said Hafiz.

Prior to the staging of the Inter-Zone would be the Inter-District competition, which Hafiz advised to have conducted on April 16 and 17.

He said the Inter-Zone championship would, among other reasons, serve as a platform to select state representatives for the Malaysia Games in Kuala Lumpur this June (2-12) as well as for the national level futsal championship, which would be at the Matsushita Indoor Stadium in Shah Alam from May 26-29, this year.

Unlike the previous championship, this year's national futsal tournament would not be conducted in a series format but instead it would be a carnival like event.

Towards this end Hafiz said that players can register only for one of the tournaments and not both.

"As a step to avoid over-playing, the committee has decided to implement a rule whereby players who register for the Open category (in the Inter-Zone championship) would only be allowed to play in that category.

"They cannot play in the Under-20 event once they register to play for the Open category and vice versa," he said.

Meanwhile, the Sabah FA Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee also conducted a futsal basic coaching course in February as well as a referee course, which was more recently conducted on March 19 and 20, this year.

"We had a total of 55 participants for the futsal referee course.

These participants are now qualified and would become the officials at the up-coming Inter-Zone tournament," said Hafiz.

Hafiz also said that development activities for futsal is heading on the right track with more programmes scheduled to be held in the latter part of this year.
