RM13.8 Million To Build 92 Futsal Pitches In Sarawak

KUCHING, April 9 - The Youth and Sports Ministry has allocated RM13.8 million for the construction of 92 futsal pitches in Sarawak, said its minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He said the ministry had asked every Member of Parliament (MP) in the state to identify appropriate sites and quotations to speed up the construction of the pitches in the state.

"The ministry has identified the futsal project as one of the attractions preferred by the youths as a recreational activity," he told reporters after attending a programme with the youths at the Kampung Buntal Homestay, here Saturday.

He said if the information required by the ministry could be obtained by the Sarawak MPs, the project was expected to be implemented in August and fully completed at the end of the year.

Earlier, Ahmad Shabery together with the ministry's team played futsal for 15 minutes with the team led by the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, for the Pantai Damai constituency.

When asked to comment on the opposition manifesto for the state election, Ahmad Shabery, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member, said the manifesto was nothing more than empty promises.

"I feel (the manifesto) is fantastic, but only the BN can implement it. It's not possible for the opposition pact, which is in shambles, to implement every promise made," he said.

The manifesto of the opposition pact comprising the DAP, PAS, and PKR, which was launched yesterday, has 10 agendas namely freedom of religion; transparent administration; an assurance on the Native Customary Rights (NCR) land; the RM1 billion poverty eradication fund; and assurance of cordial relations between the state and federal governments.

The manifesto also included fair treatment for all ethnic groups; to make Sarawak greener; protect the identity of the ethnic groups; champion the women's cause; and develop the broadband infrastructure (WiFi).

Ahmad Shabery said the opposition should be more committed in implementing the changes they had promised in Selangor, Penang, Kedah and Kelantan before trying to enter Sarawak.
