News - FAW Introduces its First Futsal Cup3 March 2011The Football Association of Wales has introduced the first National Futsal Cup with Prize Money of £1,500 and Entry into European Competition for the inaugural Winners in June.
The Competition, which will be regionalised for the Qualifying Rounds, is open to all Futsal teams affiliated to their Area Association.
The Qualifying Rounds will determine the eight teams to qualify for the National Finals later this year, with all eight Finalists guaranteed a share of the £4,250 Prize Money.
Futsal is the only small-sided version of football, recognised by UEFA and FIFA and the FAW realise its importance in technical development. Indeed, the 23 clubs in the FAW Academy Programme was introduced to Futsal through the winter months this season.
Futsal is played between two teams each with five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutes per team are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.
