Sheffield venue chosen for international Futsal friendly

One of Sheffield’s finest sporting centres has been chosen to host two international Futsal matches between our national team and Greece.

The English Institute of Sport in Sheffield (EISS) will see England take on Greece in two friendly matches on June 24 and 25.

These two back-to-back friendly matches will the first time the two teams have met since their closely fought 2-2 draw in Birmingham in 2007, and promises to be an exciting run of games.

Paul Hudson, general manager at EISS, which is operated by Sheffield International Venues said: “This is the fourth time we have seen a Futsal team play at EISS and we are delighted to host this two part friendly match for such a unique and interesting sport.

“At SIV are committed to bringing events to the city and also encourage more people in the local community to get involved in a variety of sporting activities. I hope the two matches show the variety of different sports on offer at EISS and inspire more people to get involved in this special sport.”

Futsal is FIFA and UEFA’s recognised format of 5-a-side football and in recent years has been embraced by The Football Association.

FIFA claim that it is the fastest growing indoor sport in the world, and is immensely popular outside of the UK

Simon Walker, FA National Manager for Small Sided Football, said: “The England Futsal squad has had an impressive two years, learning and developing significantly and are now a challenge for any nation on the international stage.

“The England squad needs to overcome a strong Greek team, who will pose significant challenges, but we are hopeful that the England team can do one better than the last time we faced Greece in 2007 by claiming a victory.”

Kick-off on Friday 24 June is 7:30pm and on Saturday 25 June is 4pm with tickets for each event costing £1.50 for children and students and £3 for adults.

Exhibition Futsal games involving local teams will take place before the international matches, including a match on Saturday involving Sheffield Futsal Club versus the England Development Squad.
