The Bellingen Shire - Courier SunGold for 14 years girls Futsal side24 May, 2011The 14 years girls started the day disappointed. With two teams from the earlier draw having pulled out, the girls arrived to find out the other two teams also pulled out only the day before. This meant the 14 years girls team had to play in the 16 years draw against all the 16 years teams. This was a big ask as many of the girls were playing in their first tournament, and they were missing gun striker, Sam Barker, who was still in Barcelona playing futsal for Australia. To make matters worse they had to share the amazing talents of Jessica Marks with the 16 years team.
Despite all this the girls took the court against a strong Maclean outfit determined to do their best. The more experienced players of Jessica Marks, Bianca Mason, Stella Robinson and Amelia Brewen lead the way and threatened the Maclean goal without success. Eventually the Maclean girls took control and won the game 4-0. The next game was against the even stronger BDC team. The girls, determined as ever, continued to learn how the game was played with the new girls settling in well. However, BDC were too strong and took out the game 6-0. Their final game was against Grafton HS. The young girls displayed what they had learnt and Karlie Swanson scored their first goal. They all celebrated, but there was more to come. Karlie not happy with one goal, got another and Bianca Mason also scored two with Jess marks chipping in for one. The final score 5-1 against a 16s team! This young team will go on to the Regionals in August keen to show just how good they are. Special mention on the day must go to goal keeper, Maddi Ahearn, who did such a great job against these older girls in her first tournament. Gold for the 14 years girls team.
