Futsal all-stars play to raise quake funds

Japan’s futsal all-star players played a fund-raising charity match for the victims of the East Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster on May 3 in Tokyo.

The event at Komazawa Olympic Park Gymnasium saw the Power Stars edge the Dreams Stars 5-4. Kaoru Morioka scored twice with Yasuto Ushiro, Kenichiro Kogure and Naoto Sone also scoring for the winning team.

The all-star teams were formed around players from the Puma Cup All-Japan Futsal Championship quarterfinalists. The tournament was called off shortly before Game 3 of the quarterfinals on March 11.

The Power Stars were made up of players from Stellamigo Hanamaki Iwate, Filefox Fuchu, Shonan Bellmare and Nagoya Oceans, while the Dream Stars came from Bardral Urayasu, Fuchu Athletic FC, Delcao Kobe and Vasegey Oita.

Before the game, there was an exhibition match featuring former Futsal Japan players and former Puma Cup teams, and a sale of charity goods. A total of 502,983 yen was raised in donations and 1 million yen from the charity sale. Nearly 2,000 people attended the one-day event.

The contributions will be used to help the football family in the quake-hit areas.

JFA Vice President Kuniya Daini commented: “We are grateful that so many people took part in our activities at the Puma Cup Futsal Day for the East Japan disaster relief charity. We had to cancel the Puma Cup All-Japan tournament in the middle of the quarterfinals, but today’s event helped cheer up many people as well as the Hanamaki and Urayasu teams, who suffered in the disaster.”
