Men’s team reaches quarter-finals

June 5, 2011, Sunday

KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak got off to a flying start in the men’s futsal competition at Sukma XIV here when they defeated Pahang 8-4 in a group B match at the National Sports Complex in Shah Alam.

Captain Mohd Faizal Zamri, Awangku Mohd Fazzrin Awg Mortadza, Ronald Dennis and Mohd Izzudin Jahidin all scored two goals to put Sarawak into the last eight.

Pahang’s goals were scored by Mohd Firdaus Mohd Safiee who hit the net twice and a goal each from Mohd Sharul Aizad Zulkifli and Ahmad Fitri Sallehuddin.

Sarawak team manager Poasa Majais was satisfied with the win and confident that the players could make the semi-finals.

“The first win is very important to us as it will motivate the players to beat Negeri Sembilan in our last group match tomorrow at 8am,” he said.

Win or lose, Sarawak have literally booked their quarter-final spot by collecting three points yesterday.

They will finish as leaders in group B with six points if they beat Negeri Sembilan today.

In another match played later yesterday, Sarawak women’s team faced Perlis in the opening game in group A.

Also drawn in this group are Selangor and Kuala Lumpur while the teams in group B are Sabah, Pahang and Johor.

Futsal was one of the events that made its debut in Sukma this year.
