A win will keep quarter-finals berth alive, says manager

June 6, 2011, Monday

KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak’s women will need to win their next group A match against Kuala Lumpur today if they want to make it to the quarterfinals of the futsal competition in Sukma XIV.

Their hope of booking the last eight spot today was hampered by Selangor who trounced them 7-3 at the Triways Sports Complex futsal court yesterday. “Selangor dominated the game by launching fast counter attacks and capitalising on the vast space left by the defence line,” said Sarawak coach Rogayah Ali.

They led Sarawak 4-1 in the first half and scored three more in the second half against Sarawak’s two goals. However the state women players did not face any problem in their opening match against Perlis late Saturday, winning 6-0 at the Panasonic National Sports Complex futsal court.

“We need to win our final game against Kuala Lumpur today to reach the quarterfinals,” said team manager Poasa Majais. Meanwhile, the men’s team who whipped Pahang 8-4 on Saturday failed to ride on the winning momentum by suffering a big defeat 2-9 to Negeri Sembilan yesterday morning.

The defeat did not have much bearing on Sarawak’s challenge as they are already in the quarterfinals after beating Pahang.  Sarawak goals yesterday were scored by Awangku Mohd Fazzrin Awang Mortada and Mohd Nadrin Mohd Hazman Peter.
