In my communityFutsal plans rolled out on bowling green SOCCER with a Latin twist has scored its first permanent home, on a bowling green in Nedlands.
At last month’s council meeting, the City of Nedlands approved an application from West Coast Futsal Association to use disused Hollywood-Subiaco Bowling Club facilities on Smyth Street.
The association has a five-year lease.
It plans to spend about $130,000 creating two artificial turf pitches and upgrading the adjacent childcare centre for offices and storage.
Work is expected to start in six weeks.
Up to 50 teams could use the new pitches by September.
The association’s WA manager Andrea Servatius said that in two to four years time the national titles could be held in WA.
He said there would be no noise problems because a cemetery and a school surrounded the bowling club.
Futsal is a fast-paced, five-a-side outdoor version of soccer that started in Brazil and Portugal that is now played on greens at 10 interstate bowling clubs.
Trials of senior and junior games were held at the North Fremantle Bowling Club until earlier last year.
Club president Robert Fittock said the trial found grass surfaces could not be used for three to four weeks after being damaged during small tournaments and proximity to neighbouring homes had curtailed plans for night games.
“But the junior players just love it. They damage the greens less and their matches and seniors training will continue here,” Mr Fittock said.
