Nationals beckon futsal girls

by Gerard Walsh

25th June 2011

TAYLA Blake and Sarah Tansky have proved it is possible to make a quick transformation from football to futsal after making the South West team to play in the nationals.

The pair played for Assumption College in selection trials at St Mary’s College, Toowoomba, and were the only two from Warwick to make the regional 14 years team which will play in the nationals in Brisbane in the second week of the September/October school holidays.

While Tayla is in her second season of futsal, Sarah played the game for the first time at the trials in Toowoomba.

Both have played 10 seasons of football (soccer) in Warwick and are strikers.

Tayla has a best of seven goals in one game in the under-12/13 age group.

Earlier this month, Sarah kept her eye in with three goals in club games.

Tayla gives some of the credit for her selection to a suggestion by coach Jon Pearson to play futsal in the football off season.

“Futsal is a lot quicker game than football,” Tayla said.

The two girls are now training in Toowoomba each Sunday in preparation for the nationals.

“We like the stop at Maccas on the way home,” Sarah said.

After two hours of heavy training, they deserve a burger.

The best friends both love athletics.

Sarah competed in the 100 metres and four by 100m relay at the state championships when in year six at St Mary’s.

Assumption College missed the grand final of the trials in Toowoomba by one goal on a countback as two teams from Harristown State High School played in the final.

“We were really happy to almost make the final as three netballers offered to play so we could field a team,” Tayla said.

Assumption College student Britnee Wallace made the South West 13 years futsal team but won’t compete in Brisbane.
