World at his feet

by Richard Harvey

JACOB Lennox has only been playing futsal for a year.

It hasn’t taken long for the Urangan State High School student to make an impression with the ball at his feet.

Lennox has just returned home after playing for the Australian under-14 team on a tour of Spain.

He scored the first goal of the tour for the youngsters wearing green and gold and set up the second against the host club, Mataro, in Barcelona.

Not a bad effort when you consider Lennox is such a novice at the sport and it’s one he only started playing as it was subject at his school.

He didn’t let the nerves get the better of him either during the two-week tour – he couldn’t afford to.

Lennox had a coaching session with the best player in the world, Javi Rodriguez from FC Barcelona, to look forward to and he didn’t want to mess up the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

He didn’t and said he loved every minute of the chance to learn from the master.

“It was unreal,” Lennox said.

“Words cannot describe what it felt to be there – I had to pinch myself at times.

“I couldn’t really believe I was there kicking a ball with him and listening to his every word.

“I can tell you that it’s something that I will never forget.”

Lennox said the chance to tour and meet Rodriguez, the Spanish futsal captain, had been inspirational.

“I gained so much knowledge about the game and I am determined to put it to great use,” Lennox, who has played soccer since he was five, said.

“It has inspired me to try and play at the highest level in the game I can – that would be fantastic.”

In the meantime, Lennox will continue to play soccer for Fraser Flames and continue to live his dream playing futsal.
