Shipyard remains unbeaten

by Jan Aquino

Non-stop action filled the Agueda Johnston Middle School gym last night as the two undefeated teams, Guam Shipyard and Quality Distributors, gave the crowd a great show in their final season game. In the end, Shipyard was able to walk away with the 7-6 win and the first place title over Quality.

Although Quality played with no substitutes on the bench, they were able to hold their ground throughout the whole game.

At the start of the match, both teams were pumped and eager to score. Coming off strong for Quality is the season's second leading scorer Scott Spindel who was able to fire one in between the goalkeeper and the post to gain a 1-0 lead.

Jonathan Romero led the attacks for Shipyard, but Quality's resilient goalkeeper wouldn't allow any goals.

As the clock wound down, Quality's James Bush was able to find an opening through Shipyard's tight defense to extend their lead to 2-0.

Shipyard wasn't going to end the half without a score as Romero lifted his team's confidence by smashing a shot nearly 15 yards from the goal to cut the lead.

To start the second half, a hand ball just outside the goalkeeper's area sent Don Weakley to take a free kick which ignited Shipyard's offense. Weakley's shot was fired past Quality's goalkeeper to tie the game.

Shortly after, Weakley found himself in the perfect spot as a scramble near Quality's goal gave him the opportunity to sink in another shot to gain a 3-2 lead.

Quality's Irving Mercado would answer back as he regained possession of his own rebound to slam one in the net to tie the game at 3-all.

Shipyard was there to answer as Kiko Santos found Romero to regain the lead with a goal. Shortly after, Weakley found an opening through the defense to extend Shipyard's lead to 5-3. With less than 10 minutes left, Romero would find Santos to slam one in the goal, forcing Quality to take a time-out.

Quality found hope after Bush scored a goal to shorten Shipyard's lead to 6-4. Shortly after, Mercado sent a free kick from their side of the court right through the defense and into the goal. With less than four minutes to play, Spindel tied the game at 6-6 after his shot slipped past the goalkeeper.

With the clock winding down Weakly would end up being the hero as he fired the game-winning shot without hesitation with about a minute left.

Shipyard will play at 7 p.m. this Sunday against the eighth-seeded team, while Quality plays at 6 p.m. against the seventh-seeded team at Agueda Johnston Middle School gym.
