Lip Kwok Wai12 August 2011SINGAPORE: The Jurong Town Swimming Complex has been converted to a futsal court after being vacant for more than five years.
And the response has been positive so far. It is used some 80 per cent of the time during the weekends and public holidays.
This comes after the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) requested for proposals for four closed swimming pools in 2009.
The exercise also resulted in a private operator utilising Bukit Merah Swimming Complex, which now comes equipped with a beach volleyball court and gymnasium.
The other two swimming pools are Pandan Gardens Swimming Complex and Yan Kit Swimming Complex, both of which will be returned to the State. They were not awarded tenders by the SSC as proposals did not meet the objectives of the Request for Proposal exercise.
It is hoped that with the conversion of these utilities, more Singaporeans will be spurred to participate in various recreational sports.
Patrick Lee, Senior Director of Sports and Recreation with the SSC, said: "Through the different programmes that the service provider is able to offer, it gives people an opportunity to choose from different programmes that would cater to their interest. And hopefully, they will then participate and come forward to play sports and participate in other recreational activities."
