Iran's former futsal star Babak Masoumi dies at 39

TEHRAN - Former Iran futsal player Babak Masoumi died after suffering a stroke at age 39 on Wednesday.

Masoumi, who was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2008, was working as futsal technical manager for Persepolis.

Masoumi won AFC Futsal Championship six times in 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004 2005 and 2007. He also played in the FIFA Futsal World Cup in 2000 and 2004.

He was laid to rest on Friday in Karaj's Imamzadeh Taher cemetery.

Iran’s Football Federation President Ali Kaffashian, the national team captain Ali Karimi and the other officials attended the funeral.

AFC Acting President Zhang Jilong expressed his heartfelt condolence over Masoumi’s death.

“On behalf of AFC and the Asian football family, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Masoumi’s family, friends and the Iranian futsal community,” he said.

“It is a great loss to Asian and Iranian futsal in particular because during his playing days he established Iran as a force to reckon with in the continent.”
